World of Anterra Gameplay: How It Plays
Combat is grid tactics plus quick-time timing, not a turn-based menu. Outside combat the systems are built around touching things: reading books, breaking objects, asking NPCs questions by typing them.
How it plays, in one paragraph
Grid-based tactical movement combined with quick-time actions. You move on a grid, commit to abilities, magic and crafted items, and time inputs during the exchange. 81monkeys does not call it turn-based, and that single word is where most coverage of this game goes wrong.
What the developer has documented
Four mechanics posts ran through the first quarter of 2026: palette swapping and pixel art, explosions, tools, and water. Each describes a system rather than a feature list, and each is still on the official Steam feed, which makes them usable as primary sources.
Water is the one worth reading closely. Shallow and deep environments, resources and enemies that only appear in or near water, fishing and sailing — and the game director's sign-off, "be careful not to drown your horse", is the closest thing to a mechanic reveal in the whole set.

Boom barrels use a volatile substance mined in the Mancian Wastelands, and they work for exploration as well as combat. Fuses can be found, bought or crafted.
