World of Anterra Combat: Grid Tactics, Not Turn-Based
Grid tactics plus quick-time timing. Most outlet summaries call it turn-based, and that single word changes what you expect from the first fight.
Last updated:
World of Anterra combat is grid-based tactical movement combined with quick-time actions — not a turn-based menu. You move on a grid, commit to abilities, magic and crafted items, and time inputs during the exchange. Harder fights are about reading enemy behaviour and exploiting weaknesses rather than repeating a rotation.
That sentence is the answer most listings get wrong. "Turn-based" appears in a lot of summaries, and it sets an expectation the game does not match: there is no pause to plan while a menu waits for you.
What is actually described
81monkeys' own description names the pieces:
| System | What it means in play |
|---|---|
| Grid-based tactical movement | Position is a resource; where you stand decides what you can do |
| Quick-time actions | Inputs land during an action, not before it |
| Abilities and magic | Separate resources, unlocked through progression |
| Crafted items | Consumables you make, not just find |
| Enemy behaviour reading | Vulnerabilities and patterns matter more than stats |
| Environment | Terrain and props are part of the fight |
Why the distinction is not pedantry
Turn-based and real-time-with-timing reward different preparation. If you come in expecting turns, you will over-invest in build planning and under-invest in reflexes and positioning for the first few hours.
Three practical differences:
- You cannot think indefinitely. The window between your move and the enemy's answer is short. Reading the enemy's tell is the skill, not calculating damage in a menu.
- Positioning compounds. On a grid, a bad starting square is not recoverable by a stronger spell. That also means co-op parties can cover angles a solo player cannot — see the co-op page.
- Consumables are tactical, not restorative. Crafted items appear in the same breath as abilities and magic, which suggests they are used mid-fight rather than sipped between fights.
The systems around combat
Combat is not the only place 81monkeys has published detail, and the surrounding systems explain why fights are built this way.
Water is a mechanic, not scenery. The Way of Water post (12 March 2026) states that water "factors into multiple game mechanics", with shallow and deep environments and "resources, creatures, and enemies that can only be found in or near water", plus fishing and sailing. Water you can drown in is a battlefield.
Explosions are a system. A dedicated feature post covers them, which for a grid game usually means area denial and destructible geometry rather than a damage effect.
Breakables and non-combat interaction got their own post in January 2026, and that is consistent with the typed-conversation design: the world is meant to be touched, not just fought through.
Progression and gear
Gear affects both stats and appearance through an animation layering system — the same system is used for party members, NPCs and creatures. That is a smaller claim than it sounds: it means equipment changes are visible, not that combat is cosmetic.
What is not published: level caps, damage formulas, ability counts, or how many party members you can field. Any page quoting those numbers today is extrapolating.
How to prepare before launch
If you want to arrive at the first fight with the right instincts rather than the right build:
- Watch the combat footage for tells, not for numbers. The useful information in pre-release footage is the wind-up animations and the grid movement.
- Assume consumables matter. Crafting is described as part of the combat toolkit, so the first-hour economy is worth thinking about.
- Plan for co-op coordination. Four-player tactics on a grid is a different problem from solo positioning, and it is confirmed for launch.
- Do not memorise a rotation. Nothing about quick-time actions suggests a fixed optimal sequence.
For the timeline that decides when any of this becomes testable, the release date page is the one to watch.
Is World of Anterra turn-based?
No. The developer describes grid-based tactical movement with quick-time actions, abilities, magic and crafted items. Many outlet summaries call it turn-based; that is the most common error in coverage of this game.
Is combat real-time?
Partly. Movement and actions happen on a grid in real time, with quick-time inputs during actions. It is not a purely real-time action game and not a menu-driven turn system.
Can you pause combat?
Not stated. Nothing in the published material describes a pause or planning phase, which is part of why "turn-based" is misleading.
Does gear change how characters look?
Yes. 81monkeys describes an animation layering system that applies equipment changes visually, used across party members, NPCs and creatures.
