World of Anterra Co-op: 4 Players, Crossplay, Split Screen
Four players, online or on one screen, with crossplay between them. Steam's category list is the only first-party statement, and it does not cover host size or save sharing.
Last updated:
World of Anterra supports four-player co-op, online or on a shared screen, with cross-platform play between them. Steam's category list is the source: Co-op, Online Co-op, Shared/Split Screen Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer are all present, alongside Single-player.
The four-player figure is the part that needs a footnote. Steam lists capability, not capacity — the number comes from co-optimus, which tracks co-op specs per game. 81monkeys has not published a player count on the store page, so treat four as well-sourced but secondary.
The confirmed feature set
| Feature | Status | Where it comes from |

| Shared / split screen co-op | Confirmed | Steam categories |
| Cross-platform multiplayer | Confirmed | Steam categories |
| Remote Play Together | Confirmed | Steam categories |
| Single-player | Confirmed | Steam categories |
| Four players | Reported | co-optimus listing |
| Cross-save / shared progress | Unknown | No statement |
| Drop-in / drop-out | Unknown | No statement |
Why the split-screen detail matters more than the player count
For most games the headline is "how many players". Here the more unusual line is shared/split screen co-op running alongside online co-op and crossplay. That combination is rare, and it changes how the game gets used: two people on a couch can host for two more remotely, and nobody has to buy a second copy to sit next to each other.
It also raises the questions Steam does not answer, and those are the ones people actually search for:
- Does split screen work in online sessions, or only offline? Steam's category list cannot say. It lists both capabilities, not the intersection.
- Do guests need their own copy? Remote Play Together lets a friend stream in from the host's copy, which suggests not, for that mode at least.
- Is progress shared or per-character? Nothing published.
We would rather leave three unknowns visible than fill them with a plausible-sounding guess, because a wrong answer here costs someone a purchase.
What four players implies about the design
The systems 81monkeys has described fit a party better than a solo run, which is probably why co-op is in at launch rather than patched in later:
- Grid-based combat. Tactical movement on a grid with quick-time actions means positioning is shared information. Two players can cover angles one cannot.
- NPC daily routines. A world that runs on schedules tolerates players splitting up without the world pausing for them.
- Typed conversations. The question system takes typed input rather than a dialogue wheel, which is awkward to do in a shared session and interesting that it is in the design at all.
The combat page covers the first point in detail, since it is the one that most changes in co-op.
Settings and platform reality
Co-op is confirmed for the Windows version, which is the only platform Steam lists. Console versions were mentioned in 2022 and never reconfirmed — the platforms page keeps that separate rather than assuming crossplay means console parity.
Crossplay's practical value depends on that. Today, "cross-platform" covers Windows builds across different storefronts and, if console versions ship, those too.
When this page changes
This page will move from "reported" to "confirmed" on the player count only if 81monkeys states it directly. Host size, save behaviour and split-screen-plus-online will each get a row the moment there is a build to check them in, which means after launch — the release date page is where that status lives.
How many players can play World of Anterra co-op?
Four, according to the co-optimus co-op listing. Steam confirms online co-op, split screen co-op and crossplay but does not state a player count.
Does it have split screen?
Yes. Steam lists Shared/Split Screen Co-op and Shared/Split Screen as separate categories, which covers both co-op play on one screen and single-player split screen.
Is co-op crossplay?
Yes. Cross-Platform Multiplayer is listed on the store page, and Remote Play Together is listed as well.
Is there a co-op mode separate from the main story?
Not that has been announced. Co-op is listed as a way to play, not as a separate mode.
